What does Edward says ?
Mr. ₿
@MrBeRn70
do you know @GrapheneOS , what’s your take?
Edward Snowden
@Snowden
I use it personally. I like it a lot.

@Snowden
I use GrapheneOS every day.

@Schwubdiwub1
But you trust @GrapheneOS right?

@Snowden
Looks like something very interesting may be happening in smartphone security.
(GrapheneOS is a much more secure variant of the Android operating system, but has traditionally only been supported on Google's Pixel phone.)
GrapheneOS
@GrapheneOS
We’re going to be collaborating with a hardware vendor to get a device produced with comparable security and support for alternative operating systems as Pixels.
We can’t publish details right now but we’re optimistic about it and hope to have real news about it in a few months.

OK—who thinks that Android phones are actually privacy-preserving? I sure don’t.
Edward Snowden
@Snowden
With out of the box, Google-set defaults? I'd say Android is a disaster for sure — almost certainly worse on every axis. But when was the last time you looked at a hardened, de-googled variant like @grapheneos? Easy to install now, and Apple looks pretty bad, comparatively.
Edward Snowden
@Snowden
The most frustrating part for me is that there's still this industry expectations (by both vendors) that if they want privacy, they need to work for it. You shouldn't have to dig through settings or resort to the arcane to have a secure, private device.

But as long as your phone is turned on, even with « location permissions » disabled, the radios in the phone that connect it to all the nice things you like are screaming into the air, reporting your presence to nearby cell towers, which then create records that are kept forever.
Edward Snowden
@Snowden
Software is equally important. The iOS and Android operating systems that run on nearly every smartphone conceal uncountable numbers of programming flaws, known as security vulnerabilities, that mean common apps like iMessage or web browsers become dangerous: you can be hacked.
Edward Snowden
@Snowden
If I were configuring a smartphone today, I'd use @DanielMicay's @GrapheneOS as the base operating system. I'd desolder the microphones and keep the radios (cellular, wifi, and bluetooth) turned off when I didn't need them. I would route traffic through the @torproject network.
